System administrator, programmer, and all-around curious person living in New York City.
I work as a "senior systems engineer" on the Sagesure insurance platform, focused on automation, security, and reliability. Projects have included helping rearchitect authentication and authorization management across a gaggle of polyglot services up to a decade old using Go to front and then subsume old authentication systems, porting applications to run within containers and cleanly within a large containerized ecosystem, and migrating crusty old Java applications to modern standards, practices, and frameworks.
I briefly worked as a system administrator on the Kindling product at Spigit, and on projects for the Spigit innovation platform. (Spigit was accquired by Planview in late 2018.)
I was the system administrator and a programmer. I managed and automated servers for the startup, identified and implemented policies and processes to make the system as hands-off as possible, including writing AMI management and deploy scripts. I also worked on the application, both in the frontend (it was a large complex Backbone app with interwoven React components) and the backend (PHP with some reliance on ZF1). Elasticsearch tuning, task management, and monitoring, all in the service of making companies more innovative. The company was purchased by competitor Spigit in early 2017.
An interactive map of New York City's independent bookstores that I maintain. I've also tried to visit and write capsule summaries about as many of them as I can.
I'm on the organization committee for Papers We Love New York City, the original chapter of the worldwide Papers We Love community. Also, I help organize the yearly Papers We Love conference in St. Louis.
